On average, a company loses over $7300 each year per employee due to medical and Worker’s Compensation claims and a lack of productivity according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over 50% of injury claims in office environments are lower-back injuries. Many of these injuries can be avoided by promoting good posture through education and the use of ergonomic chairs. Ergonomics is the science of equipment design, as in the workplace, which is intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort.
A sitting person uses 20% less energy to do the same work as someone who is standing if they are positioned correctly, and supported properly. Ergonomic chairs are specifically designed to increase postural stability which in turn increases comfort, health and productivity. Ergonomic chairs usually have many different adjustable parameters such as lumbar support, arm-rests, seat height, seat angle and others to ensure a personal and customized blend of support and comfort. Knowing the proper adjustments to generate correct posture can significantly reduce the chances of a lower back injury such as Secretary Back Syndrome or Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD). To ensure correct posture the following guidelines must be considered. Hands, wrists and forearms should be straight and parallel to the floor. The head should be level or bent slightly forward and in-line with the torso. Shoulders should be relaxed with the upper arms hanging normally to the side of your body. Elbows should stay close to the body and be bent between 90 and 120 degrees. The feet should be fully supported by the floor, or by a footrest. The back should be leaned slightly back, with the lumbar fully supported. It is also recommended that the thighs and hips be kept parallel to the floor and that knees and hips are close to the same height. Great posture can help cure or prevent back pain but sitting in the same position for prolonged periods is also not healthy and can lead to many painful problems. Changing positions frequently throughout the day by making small chair adjustments periodically stretching and getting up and walking around for a few minutes every hour is very important.
