Space Management – Organizing Your Desktop Into Zones PDF Print E-mail
Written by JJewell
Sometimes it can be hard to keep your desk uncluttered.  This is especially true if you are working on multiple projects at once.  By dividing your desktop into different zones, it can become much easier to stay organized which will help to keep you efficient and productive. ImageThe first zone is the Computer Zone.  This is where your PC, monitor, keyboard and peripheral accessories will go.  For this you will need a flat surface with leg room below.  Second you will want to have a Processing Zone.  This will be where you manage all your tasks and decide where they belong in your work area.  As projects come in, they start here until they are categorized and placed in another zone.

Third will be the Active File Zone.  This will be the projects that you are currently working on, or those with a higher importance and the tools you use for them.  Pens and pencils, notepads and staplers should be in this zone.  It will probably work best to keep this area right next to the Processing Zone but within easy reach.  Next is the Secondary File Zone.  This will be items with a lower level of importance, or items that are less used in work production so this area can be a little farther away than the Active File Zone, even in Filing Cabinets or Storage Areas.

The fourth zone is the Reference Zone.  This will be books, binders and other reference materials that are used during daily tasks.  Ideally you would like these items in a bookshelf or cabinet that is within reach so they do not take up room on your desktop.  Finally you will want to have a Supply Zone.  This is where you will keep your typical Office Supplies.  Desk drawers, overhead shelves or storage cabinets are usually ideal for this zone.

By classifying everything in your work area into these zones and organizing them appropriately, should help to eliminate clutter and free you up to get more work done.  After using this system for a little while it should become second nature, and you will know exactly where to look for certain items without having to think about it.
