Have you ever seen Catch Me If You Can? Remember the scene where Frank Abagnale Jr. washes the ink off the check? He makes it looks so easy, but when I watched it I assumed it was much more complicated than that. Well, it’s not. Scary, right?

Check washing is the process of erasing details from checks to allow them to be rewritten, usually for criminal purposes such as fraudulent withdrawal from the victim’s bank account. The total amount of attempted check fraud against banks’ deposit accounts reached an estimated $12.2 billion in 2006. Most of the attempts (92 percent) were caught by banks’ prevention systems or measures before incurring any financial loss to the bank.

In this video, Dr. Uni-Ball shows how and why it is so easy to wash the ink off of checks, IF you aren’t using the correct pens.
